日本のカトリック教会
How the Japanese kept the Catholic Faith without Priests or SacramentsThe Japa

The Japanese Catholics called themselves Kakure Kirishitan, or hidden Christians. They lived amidst terrible persecutions. Yet, they kept the Catholic Faith for 200 years without any Priests or Sacraments. How did they do it?
1. They passed the Catholic faith that they had received on to their children, who then taught it to their children. Thus, Catholics learned their Faith from an early age, and by keeping it a secret, assured that the Faith would be passed on to the next generation. Parents also baptized their children, and taught them to baptize their children, and this assured all the Faithful of their membership in the Church.
2. They prayed the Rosary. Japanese Catholics had a strong devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. Under her patronage, they prepared themselves for martyrdom, and they put themselves under her care all their lives.
3. They lived in remote areas where government surveillance was weak or non-existent. The military Shoguns in Tokyo controlled outlying areas through local governors, but not all of these governors had a thorough and effective Office of Religious Inquisition.
4. They lived outwardly just like the other Japanese, yet without sinning against God, and so they secretly preserved their Christian belief and practice.
The lesson for us today is that it IS possible to preserve the Catholic Faith if you can't find a Priest to provide you with the True Sacraments.
